Yard Sale

Hi everybody, it’s Pastor Dave and good (hopefully) Monday morning to you. Today, we do our “This Week” page in the Alone With God journal. So, if you’ve your Alone With God journal, open it to your next “This Week” page. Like I said, we do these Monday – it’s early Monday morning when I’m talking with you. And on the “This Week” page, we kind of set our spiritual focus for the week. This is where we review in advance this week and ask God, “What should we be focused on this week?” “What are our prayers this week?”

And so, today, Daisy wants to share a devotion that she wrote that really fits the “This Week” concept – setting our spiritual focus and our prayers. And let me just talk to you a little bit about it before I have her share it with you.

Today, we’re thinking about our inheritance. Our Inheritance from God. It’s more than we can grasp, both in this life and for eternity. Let me just read a few verses for you. You get your heart set. Open your Bible. If you want to pause as I read these verses and read them in your Bible, then do that. Or just listen and kind of set your heart this morning on your inheritance from God.

John 1:12 (NLT)
12 But to all who believed him and accepted him (or received him), he gave the right to become children of God.
Guys, if you’ve given your life to Christ, you are a child of God, and that comes with an inheritance.

2 Corinthians 6:18 (NLT)
18 And I will be your Father, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.
We have become children of God – sons and daughters of the Lord God Almighty.

Ephesians 1:5(a) (NLT)
5 God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. . .
And guys, our adoption into God’s family means that there is an inheritance for us. There’s an inheritance ready for us to receive or to reject.

Ephesians 1:11(a) (NLT)
11 Furthermore, because we are united with Christ, we have received an inheritance from God, . . .
And so, that inheritance is there. It’s been given to us. But, have we personally received it? Have we embraced it? Are we walking in it?

1 Peter 1:3(b)-4(a) (NLT)
3 . . . Now we live with great expectation, 4 and we have a priceless inheritance . . .

That’s what we have today. A priceless inheritance.

So, I’m going to ask Daisy to share an experience that she had with you to help you bring this alive in your life. So, Daisy, it’s all yours.

Hey, y’all, it’s Daisy. Today, I want to share with you a devotional that I actually wrote this week. And I hope that you are able to see how I take little lessons away from the mundane. This alone time with God, this journal, has really helped me to see God in everything, and I pray that you have the same experience because it’s truly magical. It’s miraculous. So, if you don’t have the Alone With God journal, you can get one at wordbymail.com.

Here’s today’s devotional.

Romans 8:17(a) (CEB)
17 But if we are children, we are also heirs.

So, this week, I went to a yard sale. And the girl who was having the yard sale had this big box of photo albums and vintage clothes. Really cool stuff that I found out had been passed down to her from her grandmother. And so, when she told me that, I offered to just pay for everything in the box so that she wouldn’t have to sell it because I thought maybe she needed the money. But, to my surprise, she said, “Oh, it’s okay. We weren’t really that close. I’m just going to donate it if it doesn’t sell.”

That interaction made me really sad, and it also made me think about inheritance and how it isn’t just something that you ask for. It isn’t something you ask for at all. But it is something that you have the option of receiving if you value it. It already has your name on it, but it’s yours to either keep or throw away.

And I think about how often I throw out the things that God has freely given me. And choose fear over peace. I choose anger over love. I choose worldly suffering over heavenly joy. But God still loves me, and he calls me back to him every single time. And I guess this week, I just realized I need to continue to do a better job of realizing that what he left me through the Holy Spirit is an inheritance. It is of great value. And I’m responsible for it. And I just need to do a better job respecting the gifts that God has given me so freely.

Let’s pray. Lord, thank you. Thank you for loving me and for making me an heir with Christ. Thank you. I pray that you would help me to share my inheritance with others and to be really proud of the Holy Spirit and the work that you’re doing in me, and the wisdom that you’ve granted me. Thank you for taking care of me. Thank you for leading me. Thank you for changing me and for helping me to realize where I can grow and how I can connect with you and love you better. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Guys, as we meditate on that, on our inheritance that we have in Christ, is that something that you have embraced? Like, do you own it? Do you think about it? Do you make it yours, personally? If you are in Christ, you have this inheritance. Don’t ignore it. Don’t throw it out. Maybe we need to continue to do a better job walking in our inheritance, realizing the indescribable inheritance that we have as sons and daughters of God. Maybe we need to think about ways we can respect that – honor that a little bit more. Let’s not sell our inheritance in a box at a yard sale.

May we be grateful this week. May we be thankful this week that we are heirs with Christ. And may we share that inheritance with others. May we walk in that inheritance and in that awe of “God, I can’t believe that you made me your adopted child. And you’ve given me such a great and precious inheritance, both for this life and especially for eternity.”

I pray that you really will talk to God about that today. Write in your journal about that if you can. And if you need a journal, get one at wordbymail.com. Get a journal and find out about this ministry. You can text us for any reason. We love to pray with you. You can text us at (877)790-WORD (877) 790-9673.

And, listen, guys, if God is using this ministry in your life – and I promise you he is using it in so many people’s lives – would you consider supporting us? Would you consider supporting this ministry? You can do that at wordbymail.com, or you can text, and we will send you to a place where you can help this ministry continue to grow.

Thanks for being with us today. We will see you tomorrow. Bye-bye.
