Philippians 4:4-9 (NIV) 4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. 9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.
Today, I want to talk about processing our emotions in a God-honoring way.
It’s easy to be in a good mood and respond well when we are thriving and happy. But as you look at your week, I want you to consider how you will respond to people and circumstances when things aren’t going well.
Philippians 4:6(b) gives us instructions on how to handle ourselves emotionally. It tells us that “in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”
God isn’t asking us not to feel. Emotions are a gift that tell us what stories we tell ourselves about who we are and what direction our life is heading in, so we don’t want to suppress, mediate, or deny our feelings. We should acknowledge them. But going beyond that, I think it’s so important that we bring them to God, take comfort in Him, and give thanks for what is being done in our lives — even if we can’t understand it.
The goal is to rise above our emotions and live in the truth of who we are, and act accordingly. You might feel exhausted, frustrated, or hurt, but remember that you are a child of God and stand on the promises that come with that truth. Then, rise above your emotions and act in love towards others and in response to difficult circumstances so that things can shift and you don’t block your blessings.
Prayer: God thank you that I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Thank you that you have told me exactly who you created me to be. I pray that you would prepare me in mind, body, and spirit to handle any and all circumstances with total grace and view all things as perfect through the lens of Christ. In Jesus’ name, amen.
