Here's Your Sign
Matthew 21:1-9
Message #1
It’s Palm Sunday. We are one week away from celebrating the Resurrection. One week away from celebrating (culturally) the day Jesus Christ conquered sin, death, and the grave on our behalf and rose again as the Pioneer of our own resurrection.
Palm Sunday is what kicked the Passion Week into gear, culminating in the cross, and the Resurrection. Palm Sunday is the day of what we call The Triumphal Entry. On this day, Jesus Christ rode triumphantly into Jerusalem. And on this day, more than any other day prior to the Resurrection, Jesus Christ made it clear to Israel and to us exactly who he was. And by fulfilling so many miraculous prophecies on this day, Jesus Christ was saying – Here Is Your Sign – Don’t Miss It!
The Triumphal Entry occurred at the beginning of the Passover celebration. Passover is the celebration of the sacrifice of the Innocent Lamb slain to save God’s People from the Angel of Death and free them from Egypt (which is a picture of sin).
1 Corinthians 5:7 says Jesus is OUR Passover Lamb. And on the same day that the Passover lambs were being brought into Jerusalem to be prepared to be sacrificed to remind the people of God saving them from death – on that same day the True Lamb of God that would be slain for the sin of the world was making his Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem.
Sixth months prior to the Triumphal Entry, Luke 9, verse 51 says,
Luke 9:51 (ESV)
51 When the days drew near for [Jesus] to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem.
It means Jesus became “resolutely determined” to get to Jerusalem. Jesus was resolutely determined to make sure that he would enter Jerusalem on a very specific – very exact day. And when that day came the Lord of Creation made sure every single detail went exactly how it was planned, exactly when it had been planned, and exactly how it had been written long ago in prophecy so that Israel and US would have every possible chance to make the connection, every possible chance to believe, every possible chance to put our faith and trust in The One who had orchestrated all of these events before time began.
Here’s how it started.
Matthew 21:1-3 (NLT)
1 As Jesus and the disciples approached Jerusalem, they came to the town of Bethphage (near Bethany) on the Mount of Olives. Jesus sent two of them on ahead.
2 “Go into the village over there,” he said. “As soon as you enter it, you will see a donkey tied there, with its colt beside it. Untie them and bring them to me.
3 If anyone asks what you are doing, just say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will immediately let you take them.”
This critical day had arrived. The Prophetic signs were about to fall into place. And suddenly the colt of a donkey became crucial to the event because the Holy Spirit is perfectly orchestrating every detail.
So, Jesus says – “Go there” – “Borrow the donkey” “If anyone asks, just tell them ‘The Lord needs it.’”
And in Mark 11, verses 5-6 it says,
Mark 11:5–6 (NLT)
5 As they were untying [the donkey], some bystanders demanded, “What are you doing, untying that colt?”
6 They said what Jesus had told them to say, and they were permitted to take it.
This moment, like every moment of this event, went “perfectly as planned” because on this day Jesus was fulfilling some mind-boggling, specific prophecy.
Matthew 21:4-5 says (NLT)
4 This (getting the Donkey’s colt) took place to fulfill the prophecy that said,
5 “Tell the people of Jerusalem, ‘Look, your King is coming to you. He is humble, riding on a donkey - riding on a donkey’s colt.’” (this is the exact prophecy written in Zechariah 9:9)
Everything that is happening at the Triumphal Entry is: extremely prophetic and precisely prophetic in order to give Israel and US every possible chance to recognize who Jesus is and what was coming as Jesus approached the cross. HERE IS YOUR SIGN!! Don’t miss it!
Sometimes we see Jesus do things in the Bible that don’t seem that crystal clear, right? But, sometimes, Jesus says “I am going to make this SO perfectly CLEAR that you’re going to have to bury your head very deep in the sand to miss this one.” And that is what is happening in the Triumphal Entry.
Continuing in Matthew 21, verses 6-7.
Matthew 21:6-7 (NLT)
6 The two disciples did as Jesus commanded.
7 They brought the donkey and the colt to him and threw their garments over the colt, and he sat on it.
Contrary to riding on a “warhorse,” to ride on a donkey was a symbol of peace, and even more so, to ride on the colt of a donkey.
700 years earlier Isaiah had prophesied the Messiah would come as the Prince of Peace. When Jesus was born the angels of heaven announced: “Peace on Earth” (peace had come to earth). And today Jesus is riding into Jerusalem as the “King of Peace.”
And listen please, Jesus wanted this to be so perfectly clear that this is the one and only time Jesus ALLOWED a public celebration of WHO he was. In fact, he didn’t just allow it, he completely orchestrated it.
It was the beginning of Passover week and Jews from all over Israel were making their pilgrimage to Jerusalem for the Passover and they would’ve been walking up this same road to Jerusalem at this same time.
And Jesus had just recently raised Lazarus from the dead with perfect timing so that the word had time to spread to those making their way to Jerusalem. The raising of Lazarus from the dead had put Jesus “over the top.”
The hashtag, #JesusRaisesLazarus had become the top trending topic in Israel. All of Jerusalem was “A Twitter” about Jesus and all these people were looking for Jesus. They wanted to be near him and they wanted to enter Jerusalem with him for the Passover celebration.
These crowds – for this moment – were hoping that Jesus would be the Messiah that would overthrow Rome on behalf of Israel.
How many of you know that something can be wrong and God can still be at work in it? Can you accept it? Can you say, you know what? That’s wrong. That situation is wrong, but God is at work in it. Right? That’s what is happening here. These people don’t get it. They think Jesus is a political, military, social King. And Jesus is like, okay, I can work with that. They didn’t understand – Jesus was entering Jerusalem for a much, much larger victory. But still, in their “misplaced excitement,” these crowds were part of God saying HERE’S YOUR SIGN – don’t miss it!
And so, the crowd just “fell right in” to play their part in this great, prophetic announcement.
Matthew 21:8 (NLT)
8 Most of the crowd spread their garments on the road ahead of him, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.
This was customary treatment at that time for a victorious King entering a city. And then, according to God’s perfect orchestration, these people were all shouting out the perfectly correct prophetic words.
Let me switch to the ESV here and you look for that great word of praise – Hosanna!
Matthew 21:9 (ESV)
9 And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”
Hosanna means “Save now.” It was Israel’s cry to God and it was their praise to God for God’s salvation. Which is exactly what Jesus was coming to bring in a much greater way than the people were thinking. And Jesus IS the greater Son of David (as they were shouting). Jesus IS the Messiah and the King of Israel. And Jesus had come to save, and Jesus would (ultimately) rule on the Throne of David. And everything about the Triumphal Entry is screaming out – HERE’S YOUR SIGN!! Don’t miss it!
But these miraculous prophetic signs were not all that God was orchestrating here. Because as the religious leaders saw the crowds growing and growing and as they heard the people shouting and shouting that Jesus was their Messiah and their King. It absolutely drove the religious leaders to murder. Jesus knew he was only five days away from the cross and Jesus knew all of these prophetic signs would also ensure that the religious leaders got him to the Cross – on time.
So, when the Pharisees saw what was happening here, we read in John 12 , verse 19,
John 12:19 (NLT)
19 Then the Pharisees said to each other, “There’s nothing we can do. Look, everyone has gone after him!”
Jesus is making it perfectly clear this one time exactly who he was and it was infuriating the religious elite.
You can hear them saying, No! There is no way we are allowing this ragamuffin from Nazareth to become King of Israel. He’s not even one of us. We must ensure that he is removed – permanently.
And so, the religious leaders were playing right along with God’s orchestration.
And so, with the people – playing their part and the religious leaders – playing their part, with none of them really understanding what God was really doing, in five days the religious leaders would get these same people who are today shouting “HOSANNA, HOSANNA to the King” to be shouting “CRUCIFY HIM – CRUCIFY HIM.”
But today, in the Triumphal Entry, the crowd crying Hosanna was a huge part of the prophetic sign Jesus was delivering to the world.
BUT… why this particular day?
Prior to this day, Jesus had sidestepped every attempt to announce him as Messiah and King and in a number of those situations Jesus responded with the words “My HOUR has not yet come.”
But that was not some kind of spiritual metaphor. There actually WAS an hour that had been pre-determined in the throne room of heaven and THAT day and THAT hour HAD COME – just as it had been very specifically prophesied.
And so, at this point in the Triumphal Entry, we read in Luke’s account,
Luke 19:39–40 (ESV)
39 And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” (for crying out HOSANNA)
40 He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”
On this day, at this moment, if those people would not have been crying out HOSANNA then God would’ve had the rocks on the road do it for them. Because God had clearly and specifically promised that Israel’s true Messiah and King would come to them – on this exact DAY and IN this exact WAY.
The sign had to be so clear that we have to fight to not see it. Do you know people today who do that? That you can give them all the evidence of the Bible and yet they are resolutely determined to not believe? That’s was Israel was. But on this day, the Messiah had come. On this exact day.
Five hundred years before Jesus was born, the prophet Daniel made it clear there would be sixty-nine sets of seven years between the time the decree to rebuild the Temple was given to the day the Messiah would announce himself to Israel.
Sixty-nine sets of seven years – that’s four hundred and eighty-three years – on the Jewish calendar that equals 173,880 days from the time the decree to rebuild the Temple was given to the DAY that the Messiah would present himself to Israel.
And in Nehemiah 2:1, the date that the decree was given to rebuild the Temple is clearly stated. And so, on that day – IF – the priestly calendar family would have marked DAY 1 on the priestly calendar and then started counting each day, and IF they would have done that, they would’ve been getting close to 173,880 as MARCH of 33 AD approached. And then there would’ve been ten days left, and then five days left, and then one day left. And then on the very next day this event we’re looking at here – historically happened.
And in other messages, we’ve looked at all the verses and broken down all the math (and I can direct you to those messages). But I assure you, it’s been well proven the Triumphal Entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem happened exactly when DANIEL prophesied it would.
There are actually over three hundred prophecies in the Old Testament that Jesus Christ fulfilled in his life, death, and resurrection. Three hundred miraculous, prophetic signs and most of Israel and far too many people you and I know are still missing it. We have all the signs. All the proofs. All the miracles. But still, there are far too many people who refuse to see what God has made so clear.
Okay, just one more prophecy for today. In the parallel account of the Triumphal Entry in Luke 19, Jesus crested the Mount of Olives and started down toward Jerusalem (like we do), and we read the following in Luke 19, verses 41-44.
Luke 19:41–44 (NLT)
41 But as he came closer to Jerusalem and saw the city ahead, he began to weep.
42 “How I wish today that you of all people would understand the way to peace. But now it is too late, and peace is hidden from your eyes.
43 Before long your enemies will build ramparts against your walls and encircle you and close in on you from every side.
44 They will crush you into the ground, and your children with you. Your enemies will not leave a single stone in place, because you did not recognize it when God visited you.”
Jesus is prophesying the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple by Rome – which occurred in 70 AD. And as verse 44 says, when Rome destroyed the Temple, they did not leave one stone on top of another. And when we’re there, we stand next to a huge pile of stones that were toppled off the Temple Mount when Jerusalem was destroyed by Rome in 70 AD.
And Jesus wasn’t the first to make this prophecy Daniel made the same prophecy five hundred years earlier in Daniel 9:26.
Guys, the Triumphal Entry is the final turning point in the life of Jesus. This is the moment – Jesus gave the world his clearest sign prior to the Resurrection. So many prophecies came to pass – so clearly.
But… for the most part, the religious leaders and the people still missed it. What sign is in your life that you are still missing it?
God gave them crystal clear, miraculous, undeniable, prophetic proof – as their SIGN and they still… MISSED IT!!
Don’t miss the signs!!
God has given you – so many, clear, miraculous, undeniable, prophetic signs that Jesus Christ IS who he says he IS, and he is going to DO what he says he’s going to do.
God has given you all the signs you need. But in order to not miss it, you must reach out (in faith) and receive it.
You must have “eyes to see” and you will see.
You must have “ears to hear” and you will hear.
You must CHOOSE to believe and God will continue to reveal himself to you in miraculous, undeniable ways!
Would you pray that right now? Lord, give me eyes to see. Ears to hear. A heart to know you. And if you’ve never committed your life to Christ as Messiah – here’s your sign.
The Bible is irrefutable proof of the Savior Jesus Christ being real, being alive, and being the only way for you to deal with your sins. God, give us the faith to believe. You can make that your prayer right now.
