He Heals The Brokenhearted
Psalm 147:3
What I want to talk to you about today is “walking with a limp.”
Many of us are walking “with a limp” in our relationship with God, and in our relationships with others. Many of us have been hurt (or wounded) physically, and the result has been some type of physical “limp.” There is a physical sign of the injury, a way for people to say; “Ohhhh! What happened? Is there anything I can do for you?” Well, that is not the ‘limp’ I want to talk about today. Today, I’d like to talk about the other kind of ‘limp,’ the kind that’s not so easy to see.
The ‘limp’ we’re talking about today is on the inside. It is an ‘impairment,’ an ‘obstacle’ of the heart. I’m talking about an emotional or spiritual wound that has not been healed correctly, and so it is causing us to ‘limp.’
Many of us are walking with a limp, an impairment, and if that limp is not healed, it can eventually cause us to become ‘dislocated.’ Hebrews 12:12-13 says this:
Hebrews 12:12-13 (NKJV)
12 Therefore strengthen the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees,
13 and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be dislocated, but rather be healed.
A physical injury or wound, if left untreated or mistreated, will heal incorrectly or never heal at all, causing a permanent impairment. Well guess what, an injury of the heart, or a spiritual injury, if left untreated or mistreated, will heal incorrectly, or never heal at all, causing a permanent impairment. What happens, when these wounds don’t get healed correctly, is they simply get covered up with ‘scar tissue.’ So, we look kind of okay on the outside, but on the inside, we have a permanent ‘limp’ in our relationship with God and our relationships with other people.
Our M.I.P. (Most Important Point) today is; “Jesus Christ Heals the Brokenhearted”
I want you to know today, that Jesus Christ came to heal the wounds of your heart, to heal you of the “limp” that you are walking with. Turn over to Luke 4:16-21;
Luke 4:16-21(NKJV)
16 So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read.
17 And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written:
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed;
19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”
20 Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him.
21 And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”
Jesus Christ is quoting Isaiah 61:1, and he is saying HE is the one who has come to;
#1) Bring Salvation (preach the gospel)
#2) Heal the brokenhearted (some versions don’t have these words but they’re in Isaiah 61:1)
#3) Proclaim liberty to the Captives
#4) Give Sight to the Blind
#5) Set at Liberty those who are Oppressed
We must know first, that everything flows from Salvation. It is always first and foremost just as it is in this list. Then, not in addition to salvation, but flowing from salvation, comes healing. And specifically, there are two healings here in Luke 4:18 I’d like to focus on today;
#1) Healing for the Brokenhearted
#2) Giving Liberty to the Oppressed and to the Captives
There are those who suffer from wounds of the heart, wounds that are hidden from all but God. These are the brokenhearted . . . and Jesus Christ has come to bring you healing. And there are those who are oppressed today. They are limping from the effect of some event in their lives. These are the captives . . . and Jesus Christ has come to set you free from that bondage. In Luke 4:18 the word “Liberty” is used twice. The literal definition of “Liberty” is “to release from bondage.” And in this same verse “To be Oppressed” literally means “to be downtrodden.” Jesus Christ has come to heal the brokenhearted and to release the oppressed (downtrodden) from their bondage.
If you are walking thru life with a limp today, because of an emotional or spiritual “wound,” Jesus Christ has come to bring you healing. And he has come to bring you release from that bondage. How do I know that? Because Jesus Christ is Jehovah Rapha. Seven times in the book of John Jesus Christ proclaims “I AM.” I AM Jehovah, the Covenant name of God. I AM is “Jehovah.”
Jesus Christ said;
I AM the Bread of Life
I AM the Light of the World
I AM the Door of the Sheep
I AM the Good Shepherd
I AM the Resurrection and the Life
I AM the Truth and the Way
I AM the True Vine
I AM is Jehovah the Lord God. In Exodus 15, the Children of Israel came upon their first real trial after the exodus from Egypt, their first “testing” thru tribulation. And it was in that very first real tribulation, the Lord God revealed Himself to the Children of Israel in Exodus 15:26 (NKJV).
He said to them “For I AM “Jehovah Rapha” - “The Lord Who Heals You”
The word “Rapha” - when it’s applied to God - means literally = “Healer of Men” “I AM Healing” “I AM the Lord Who Heals you”
When this same word “Rapha” is applied to us - it means literally = “to be healed of personal distress”
JEHOVAH RAPHA means “I AM HEALS”
And this same Jehovah is here today and if you’ve made Him your personal Savior, then He is living inside you and he has come;
To Bring Healing for the Brokenhearted and
To Release the Oppressed from their Bondage
Psalm 147:2-3 (NKJV)
2 The Lord builds up Jerusalem; He gathers together the outcasts of Israel.
3 He heals [Rapha] the brokenhearted And binds up their wounds.
Jehovah Rapha - “I AM the Lord Who Heals You”
If I asked you, “Why did Jesus Christ come into this world?” You would probably say, “To die for our sins, so we can be forgiven” and you would be totally right – we call that “propitiation” and in 2 Corinthians 5 it perfectly describes Christ’s “Atoning Death.”
2 Corinthians 5:21 (NKJV)
21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
And more than anything else we thank God for that. But between his miraculous birth and his atoning death, Jesus Christ went thru immeasurable pain and suffering – WHY? Why was it necessary for the great I AM to suffer so tremendously on the way to being our atoning sacrifice? Couldn’t he have just gone straight to the cross to die for our sins? Was it necessary for him to suffer so incredibly much, on the way?
Turn to Isaiah 53.
Please hear this: the tremendous suffering that Christ went through -
Every stripe laid across his back
Every wound he received
Was for you and for me and it was for a very specific purpose.
Isaiah 53:5 (NKJV)
5 But He was wounded [pierced thru] for our transgressions, He was bruised [crushed] for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed.
Jesus Christ suffered horrendously so that you and I might be healed and that word “healed” at the end of Isaiah 53:5 that word is “Rapha” as in “Jehovah Rapha” . . . I AM the Lord Who Heals You. Jesus Christ has come into your life not only to Save you for eternity but to heal you for today.
Is it possible to put this miraculous healing into a “process”? Let me try, in order to give you a track to run on.
The “process” can be “outlined” in three general steps:
REALIZE – RELEASE and REPENT – RESTORE
STEP #1) REALIZE “Why you are Limping?”
Webster’s dictionary defines “realize” as “to be fully aware.” We must ask God to make us “fully aware” of why we’re limping -
What is it that’s preventing us from going forward with God?
What is it that’s causing us to walk with a “limp” in our lives?
What am I holding onto? What am I carrying that’s keeping me from walking the way God intended?
Turn over to Psalm 32.
Psalm 32 is a “companion” to Psalm 51. It took David over one year to acknowledge and confess the sin that had separated him from God and in Psalm 32 David is looking back and remembering that time when his walk with God had a terrible “limp” in it.
Psalm 32:3-4 (NKJV)
3 When I kept silent, my bones grew old Through my groaning all the day long.
4 For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; My vitality was turned into the drought of summer.
Then in verse 5, we see David’s first step to being restored to God.
Psalm 32:5 (NKJV)
5 I acknowledged my sin to You, And my iniquity I have not hidden. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,” And You forgave the iniquity of my sin.
Like King David, we’ve got to become fully aware of what is causing the “limp” – the separation from God – in our life, and then once we become “fully aware” of what’s causing the “limp” step two is always required at some level.
Step #2) RELEASE and REPENT – Divine Forgiveness
I’ve found that this step is always required in some way. This is the “Big Step” and all that’s involved can’t be reviewed in this message. Listen to the message titled “Divine Forgiveness.” But let me give you general information.
First, we’ve got to accept that God’s promise to heal your “limp” is actually “conditional.” In Exodus 15 when the Lord revealed Himself as Jehovah Rapha, his promise to heal Israel was actually conditional on them obeying him, and throughout the Bible, we see that we “have a role” in this healing process. Our healing is supernatural but it’s not magic. Many of us need to “forgive” before God’s supernatural healing can begin. If you are holding “unforgiveness” your “limp” will never be healed.
You’ve got to ask yourself: “Do I want to get well or do I want to get even?” Because you can’t have both! If you’ve been hurt (injured) by another person no matter how deep or excruciating the injury, your walk in life will have a serious “limp” until you have “divine forgiveness” for that person. You’ve got to give up your “right” to get even. The only way healing will come is through forgiveness. Getting even or holding onto the pain will NEVER bring healing.
Colossians 3:13 (NKJV) says: “Forgive one another even as Christ forgave you”
Mark 11:25 (NKJV) says: “if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you”
Romans 12:17 (NKJV) and the following says: “Repay no one evil for evil. Do not avenge yourselves. Do not be overcome by evil but overcome evil with good”
And the parable of the “Unforgiving Servant” in Matthew 18 shows us that unforgiveness brings “torture” into our lives.
Why do you need to Forgive?
1) Because God forgave you
2) Because you need to be forgiven
3) Because it’s the only way you’re going to be healed
4) Because you’re making lives around you miserable
And why do I say this step is “RELEASE and REPENT”?
For two reasons:
1) Because unforgiveness is a sin. It breeds bitterness, resentment, and anger all of which are sins and all of which separate you from God
2) Because your “limp” may primarily be from a sin that you need to REPENT of
But here’s what I want you to know most today both forgiveness and repentance require ACTION. Most often when I see supernatural healing in these matters it is at the moment of face-to-face forgiveness and/or repentance. Sometimes that’s not possible, and God can still bring the healing. But if it is possible, it is the KEY to bringing healing. There’s so much more I’d like to say in this area but I’ll have to save it for another day.
STEP #3) RESTORE - Refocus on God’s future for you
One of the greatest things about our God is he is the God of complete restoration and once you’ve REALIZED - RELEASED and REPENTED, you’ve got to allow God to restore you to his plan and future for you! In other words, you’ve got to choose to NOT live in the past but instead, to live in God’s plan, God’s future for you.
Philippians 3:13-14 (NKJV)
13 Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead,
14 I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
That is our God – That is our Jehovah Rapha – The Lord God Who Heals You
He will restore you to a “right walk” -
He will restore you to “complete health”
If you will allow him to.
And lastly, God will redeem the pain. God will take the pain that you give him and he will use it for good. For his good and for your good. And one of the primary ways he does that is by using you to comfort those who have experienced the same pain.
In closing turn over to 2 Corinthians Chapter 1.
There is no way to bring a “complete teaching” on this in one message. My desire today is to introduce you to Jehovah Rapha – The Lord God Who heals you – and to tell you that Jesus Christ has come to heal the brokenhearted, and to release the oppressed from their bondage.
My prayer for you is that you would make a commitment today to begin this process of healing . . .
REALIZE – RELEASE and REPENT – BE RESTORED
2 Corinthians 1:3-7 (NKJV)
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort,
4 who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.
5 For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also abounds through Christ.
6 Now if we are afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effective for enduring the same sufferings which we also suffer. Or if we are comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation.
7 And our hope for you is steadfast, because we know that as you are partakers of the sufferings, so also you will partake of the consolation.
POEM:

Because Jehovah Rapha is here today.
