The Most Incredible Worship Event Ever
Revelation 5:1-14
Message #14
Chapters 4 and 5 go together, so this is a continuation of the picture we saw in the throne room of Heaven in Chapter 4. We paused last week to talk about the crowns that the twenty-four elders (who represent all Believers) were casting before the throne “in worship.” Last week, we talked about the judgment seat of Christ and the rewards that those crowns represent.
But our message in Revelation Chapter 4 that goes with Chapter 5 was called “The Priority of Worship.” Today, we return to that same throne room worship scene that we began in Chapter 4. And it’s important that we keep these two worship chapters together because IN these two chapters is The Most Incredible Worship Event Ever!
So, John is continuing to describe the same incredible worship scene from Chapter 4, and we pick it up in Revelation Chapter 5.
Revelation 5:1 (NLT)
1 Then (continuing from Ch 4) I saw a scroll in the right hand of the one who was sitting on the throne. There was writing on the inside and the outside of the scroll, and it was sealed with seven seals.
In the right hand of God the Father on the throne, John sees a scroll that looks like a Roman Will – sealed with seven seals (legal procedure of Rome). And the most widely held interpretation here is this scroll is the Title Deed to the world. It is the Father’s Will (legal document) giving the final Title Deed to the World to the Son. The scroll is written on the front and the back, meaning it is completely full (and nothing can be added).
And guys, as this scroll is unrolled, the entire seven-year Tribulation on earth will unfold leading up to the world being returned to its rightful owner – Jesus Christ!!!
I love Chapter 5 because “it’s on now!” This is the beginning of the beginning. It’s the beginning of the beginning of Jesus Christ rightfully taking the rulership of this world back.
So, here’s how important this scroll is. By the time this scroll is finished being unrolled, the seven-year Tribulation Period will be over. So, in this scroll that we see right here in verse 1, the entire seven-year Tribulation is held within this scroll. When we’re done with this scroll, we will be at the Second Coming of Jesus in Chapter 19.
So, here’s how it works. As the scroll unrolls the seven-year Tribulation period unrolls (I want to say ‘unfolds’, but it’s a roll – it’s a scroll), we are going to see three sets of seven.
Seven seals
Seven trumpets
Seven bowls
These three sets of seven make up the entire seven-year Tribulation period, and they are all contained in this scroll the Father has in his hand.
Here is a rough outline of the seven-year Tribulation.
The first six seals come off in order, one at a time, and then there’s a pause. And then when the seventh seal is broken, and within the seventh seal are seven trumpets. The first six trumpets come off in order, one at a time, and then there’s another pause. And then, within the seventh trumpet (when it sounds), it opens seven bowls, the final seven bowls of judgments, and that’s when it gets really radical. It’s hard to imagine the wrath and the judgment of God being poured out on the world, along with all hell literally breaking loose on the world. It gets pretty ugly by the time we get to the seven bowls. But by the time this scroll is fully un-rolled, the seven-year Tribulation period is over, and we’re at the Return of Christ in Chapter 19, and everything is awesome for the rest of eternity.
The unrolling of this scroll first brings the judgment of God upon the world. Then, it transfers the rulership of the world to the one and only rightful heir. It’s not that Jesus doesn’t own the earth; it’s that the rulership (the authority on the earth) has been usurped.
Psalm 24:1–2 (NLT)
1 The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it. The world and all its people belong to him.
2 For he laid the earth’s foundation on the seas and built it on the ocean depths.
The world originally and ultimately belongs to the Lord.
Colossians 1:16 (ESV)
16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth . . . all things were created through him and for him.
We call Jesus the “The And all things are going back to him!!! And what we are seeing here in Revelation Chapter 5 is that beginning to happen.
Back in Genesis Chapter 1, God gave this earth to MAN. In Genesis 1:28, God said to Man, “. . . fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over . . . every living thing” And Adam and Eve did that right up until Genesis Chapter 3, when Man gave this world over to Satan in sin. But through sin – Satan has usurped the rightful rulership of this world. To usurp means “To take a position of authority without the legal right” (what Satan has done). And here in Revelation Chapter 5, the rightful rulership of the world is about to be given back to its rightful owner – Jesus Christ.
So, let’s watch it happen. First, John sees the scroll in the hand of the Father on the throne.
Revelation 5:2-3 (NLT)
2 And I saw a strong angel, who shouted with a loud voice: “Who is worthy to break the seals on this scroll and open it?”
3 But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll and read it.
A strong, mighty angel shouts with a powerful voice, “Who is worthy to break the seals on this scroll and open it?” And verse 3 says no one in Heaven – on Earth – or even under the Earth was found worthy to break the seals and open the scroll.
Now, I’ve got to wonder if this was a little “dramatic build-up” on God’s part. We should know – there is One Who IS WORTHY. I would think John would know who that One Who is Worthy would be. But it seems like maybe it’s all just a little too much for John. It’s got to be more overwhelming than we could ever imagine.
So, in Revelation 5, verse 4, John says this.
Revelation 5:4 (NLT)
4 Then I began to weep bitterly because no one was found worthy to open the scroll and read it.
And we want to say, come on, John – come on.
You know Who’s worthy.
You know Who’s able.
And then one of us does say that.
One of us – a Believer – one of our representatives helps John get it together.
Revelation 5:5 (NLT)
5 But one of the twenty-four elders (representing all believers) said to me, “Stop weeping! Look, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the heir to David’s throne, has won the victory. He is worthy to open the scroll and its seven seals.”
Maybe John just cracked a little under the magnificence of it all. And so, one of the Elders who represents US says to him, “John! Get it together, bro!” “The Lion of the tribe of Judah, the heir to David’s throne, has won the victory. He is worthy to open the scroll and its seven seals.” And so, John does “get it together” as much as possible. And he turns to see the Lion mentioned in verse 5. But instead, John sees the Lion that is the Lamb.
And then we read this.
Revelation 5:6 (NLT)
6 (John looks to see the Lion) Then I saw a Lamb that looked as if it had been slaughtered, but it was now standing (a lamb that had been Slain, but was now resurrected) between the throne and the four living beings and among the twenty-four elders (standing right in the middle of ALL of this incredible worship). He had seven horns and seven eyes, which represent the sevenfold Spirit of God that is sent out into every part of the earth. (a reference to God’s omniscience and omnipotence)
The Elder says to John The Lion of the Tribe of Judah has conquered and can open the scroll. And John turns, and he sees…a Lamb. And not just a Lamb. But a Lamb that had been slain but was now standing (as in Resurrected). And not only standing in resurrection victory but with seven horns. Horns symbolize power, and seven is the number of perfection. And not only a Lamb that had been slain and resurrected that was standing in perfect power but also with seven eyes which represent the sevenfold Spirit of God that is sent out into every part of the earth.
This is an incredible description of Jesus Christ, and it should leave us in absolute awe.
And let me point out just one thing. John could easily tell that this Lamb had been slain. Meaning the evidence of the price Jesus paid to redeem you and me from our sin will always remain visible to us in Heaven. Maybe so that we will never forget how great a sacrifice it took to get us there.
And so, Jesus is described here as the Lion and the Lamb. As the Lion of the Tribe of Judah (verse 5), Jesus is God’s promised, eternal ruler of this world.
And as heir to David’s throne (verse 5), the literal translation is the Root of David because Jesus is the source (the Beginning) of the lineage of God’s rulers.
And as the Lamb that was slain (verse 6), Jesus is our Savior who paid the full penalty for our sin, making the only way possible for us to be in Heaven with him.
And as the Lion and the Lamb, Jesus is about to take the title deed to the world and begin the process of rightfully returning the world to his rule.
Jesus came the first time as the Lamb to save you from the penalty of sin. He’s coming the second time as the Lion to rule and reign for eternity.
As the Lamb – he was judged for your sin
As the Lion – he will judge sin and rule the world
As the Lamb – he took upon himself your judgment
As the Lion – he WILL Bring Judgment upon the world
And whether Jesus is the Lamb that was slain for your sin, or the Lion that will be your judge… is up to you.
He is both, and he will be one or the other in YOUR life. If Jesus Christ will be the Lamb who took your sin away, making a place for you to be with him for eternity, or if he will be the Lion of the Tribe of Judah that must execute judgment upon your sin. He is both Lion and Lamb. Which one he is to you depends on your acceptance or rejection of him by faith. You put your faith in him, and the Bible says you are so identified with him that when he paid for the sin of the world, that you receive the benefit of that. If not, then you will be under his judgment.
This is Jesus Christ getting ready to rule.
Daniel 7:14 says (NLT)
14 . . . His rule is eternal—it will never end. His kingdom will never be destroyed.
And it starts right here.
Revelation 5:7–8 (NLT)
7 He (Jesus) stepped forward and took the scroll from the right hand of the one sitting on the throne (the Father).
8 And when he took the scroll, the four living beings (worship leaders) and the twenty-four elders (us) fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp, and they held gold bowls filled with incense, which are the prayers of God’s people. (notice - worship and prayer go together)
Immediately when Jesus receives the title deed to the earth, the four living beings (the worship leaders of Heaven) and the twenty-four elders (who represent us) – everyone falls down before the Lamb to worship!
And verse 8 says the twenty-four elders were each holding a harp. Guess what? The Greek word translated harp here is most accurately a “LYRE” like King David played. A lyre is a hand-held harp that looks an awful lot like a guitar! I can’t wait ’till we are all walking into Heaven, and each of us is handed a guitar to join in worship around the throne. And the prayers of the saints will become the sweet aroma of the worship of Heaven.
And we (represented by twenty-four elders) are singing a new song with everything we have got.
Revelation 5:9–10 (NLT)
9 And they sang a new song with these words: “You are worthy to take the scroll and break its seals and open it. For you were slaughtered, and your blood has ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation.
10 And you have caused them to become a Kingdom of priests for our God. And they will reign on the earth.”
We’re singing worthy is the Lamb.
Worthy is the Lamb
Worthy is the Lamb
For you were slain and your blood has ransomed us – You have redeemed us back to God – from every tribe and language, and people, and nation. And you have made us a Kingdom of Priests four our God. And we will reign on the earth WITH you.
At this point, the worship in the throne room of Heaven is already more than we can really grasp. But then comes the grand finale of this “Most Incredible Worship Event Ever.”
Us and the heavenly worship leaders are not the only ones worshiping!!
Revelation 5:11 (NLT)
11 Then I looked again, and I heard the voices of thousands and millions of angels around the throne and of (around) the living beings (worship leaders) and the elders (us).
thousands and millions of angels
This is like me asking my grandkids when they were young, “How many stars do you see in the sky?” and they say, “A thousand million trillion.”
John is trying to convey a number that is impossible to calculate. A thousand million trillion angels are joining in the worship around the throne as Jesus Christ takes the scroll from the Father that contains the title deed to the world.
And what are these thousand million trillion angels crying out?
Revelation 5:12 (NLT)
12 And they sang in a mighty chorus: “Worthy is the Lamb who was slaughtered— to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and blessing.”
An ocean of angels too numerous to ever count, all crying out in worship together. Worthy is the Lamb worthy is the Lamb who was slain.
He is worthy
to receive power and riches and wisdom
and strength and honor and glory and blessings
The worship leaders of Heaven are crying out
All the Church in Heaven is crying out
The ocean of angels is crying out
and it’s not enough!! IT IS NOT ENOUGH!!!
EVERY CREATURE that has been created must all join in this most incredible worship event ever!!!
Revelation 5:13 (NLT)
13 And then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea. They sang: “Blessing and honor and glory and power belong to the one sitting on the throne and to the Lamb forever and ever.”
Every creature in Heaven – on earth – under the earth – and in the sea – all crying out with the heavenly choir. “Blessing and honor and glory and power belong to the one sitting on the throne and to the Lamb forever and ever.” This worship event is so incredible it requires all of creation to join in. This is all of creation in all-out worship of the Lamb who was slain – who is about to take on his role as the Lion of Judah.
And I love this last verse because the twenty-four elders do exactly what I pray we would all do – even now. What if we could do this now? Ephesians Chapter 1 says we’ve been given the Holy Spirit as a down payment, an earnest, as a down payment of all that God has for us. And so, with the Holy Spirit in us, we can taste this now!
Revelation 5:14 (NLT)
14 And the four living beings (worship leaders) said, “Amen!” And the twenty-four elders (us) fell down and worshiped the Lamb.
We can do that here!!
Listen to me, please.
in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. . . . the trumpet will sound, and
As Believers, we will find ourselves in the midst of the most incredible worship event ever!! DO NOT MISS IT!!! In the twinkling of an eye – RAPTURO – caught up! We are caught up into this very scene where all of creation is worshiping the Lamb. Do not miss that!
This most incredible worship event ever is the beginning of the beginning of the rule and reign of Jesus Christ our Lord over all of the world.
And today – you can KNOW (for sure) that you will BE THERE. I don’t know what you think God should be doing that he’s not doing in your life. I don’t know what your issues are with God, but I’m telling you one thing. What Jesus did is so you can be here at this moment. THIS is your best life now. Not here on this world; it doesn’t matter how white your teeth are. This is not your best life. In this world you have tribulation – you’re passing through. You’re a sojourner. You’re a pilgrim. You want to be around the throne when God snatches you up to Heaven. THAT’S the most incredible worship event ever!!
NOT by anything you can do or earn. The Bible says it is only by you putting your faith in Jesus Christ alone. If we willingly (Paul says in Philippians 3) cast overboard – throw off all things that we thought were important in order to gain Christ and to be found in him. Paul says in Philippians 3:11, If by any means I may attain to the resurrection of the dead… What he means is it doesn’t matter what the path looks like between here and there. I just want to make sure I’m there! I just want to be there.
Repent of the sin that separates you from God
Receive Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord
You can put your faith in Jesus Christ today. And the Bible says you’ll become so identified with him that what he’s done becomes what you’ve done and that he’ll exchange your sin for his righteousness. And when the last trumpet blares, you’ll be caught up into this throne room. And if you will DO THAT, there will be a place reserved for you at the Most Incredible Worship Event Ever!
