The Real New Jerusalem
Revelation 21:9-23
Message #42
We are in our fourth message of this mini-series, taking a closer look at Heaven. We started with the “big picture” message “Heaven is Real,” and then we looked at the realness of Heaven in “Real Earth Real Bodies.” And in our last message, we looked at the differences between “Present Heaven Eternal Heaven.” And through it all, our goal has been to shake up our misconceptions and misunderstandings about Heaven.
I believe the enemy, using the influence of the world, has clouded our minds about Heaven, and he has deflated our excitement and stolen our passion for Heaven.
And we are trying to turn that around in our own hearts and minds. Today, we are going to look at the Real New Jerusalem as we continue to focus on the realness of Heaven.
For our fourth message in a row, let’s start in Revelation 21, verses 1-4.
Revelation 21:1–4 (NLT)
1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the old heaven and the old earth had disappeared. And the sea was also gone.
2 And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven like a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.
3 I heard a loud shout from the throne, saying, “Look, God’s home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them.
4 He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.”
We keep reading these verses because they are the everything verses. They tell us that God’s home will be among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them. That’s the definition of Heaven – God lives with us, and we live with God.
And that is what makes Heaven – Heaven.
And again, we are reminded there will be a New Heaven, a New Earth, and a New Jerusalem. We’ve talked quite a bit about the New Heaven (meaning our Heavens – our atmosphere and our stellar Heaven and space) and New Earth. Today, we will focus on the New Jerusalem.
And probably the best way to imagine the New Jerusalem is this. The New Jerusalem is the Capital City of all that Heaven is. Does that help differentiate it a little bit? Because we think of Heaven as some ethereal, non-tangible place. That’s not how the Bible describes it. It’s very, very tangible, it’s very real. The New Jerusalem is the center of the New Heaven and New Earth, but it is not the entirety of the New Heaven and New Earth.
We’ve talked a lot about God restoring us to a real, tangible, face-to-face relationship with him and with one another to a “no-sin” environment, and the New Jerusalem will be the center of where that happens.
So, let’s dive into the Real New Jerusalem today.
Revelation 21:9 (NLT)
9 Then one of the seven angels who held the seven bowls containing the seven last plagues came and said to me, “Come with me! I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.”
And if you’re thinking, “Isn’t the Church the Bride of Christ?” Yes, we are, and we are there with God IN this city. The angel is using the same descriptive language as John used for the New Jerusalem, back in verse 2.
Revelation 21:10 (NLT)
10 So he took me in the Spirit to a great, high mountain, and he showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God.
This is the same thing we read in the first four verses. Notice in both places that the New Jerusalem descends out of Heaven from God, but the Bible never says that it “lands” on earth or touches earth.
Eleven times in Revelation 21 and 22, John uses the word “city” to refer to this New Center of Heaven. It is the perfect Paradise City with everything right in it and nothing wrong. It is a real city that will be the base of our life in the Eternal Heaven with God. It’s not the entirety of Heaven, and I would liken it to a command base. This is from where we will go and do what we will go and do in Heaven. And it is a city that’s been longed for throughout the Bible.
Hebrews 11:10 (NLT)
10 Abraham was confidently looking forward to a city with eternal foundations, a city designed and built by God.
The New Jerusalem is it!
In Revelation 21, verse 11, John tries to summarize the indescribable glory of the real New Jerusalem.
Revelation 21:11 (NLT)
11 It (Meaning the city of New Jerusalem) shone with the glory of God and sparkled like a precious stone—like jasper as clear as crystal.
This is the radiance of the full glory of God AS it shines through New Jerusalem. In Exodus Chapter 40, when the glory of God filled the Tabernacle, Moses could not even enter the Tabernacle. In 1 Kings Chapter 8, when the glory of God willed the Temple, the Priests could not even enter the Temple. But this is not so when the glory of God dwells permanently in the New Jerusalem. The glory of God will shine through the entire New Jerusalem. And John says in verse 11, It sparkled like a precious stone - like jasper as clear as crystal.
Many commentators believe John is trying to describe a perfect diamond here, with the full glory of God shining through every bit of it coming down out of Heaven as the Crown Jewel of the New Heavens and New Earth.
Just glance down at Revelation 21, verse 23.
Revelation 21:23 (NLT)
23 And the city has no need of sun or moon, for the glory of God illuminates the city, and the Lamb is its light.
That is how incredible the glory of God is going to be in the New Jerusalem. This is the glory of God Moses asked to see in Exodus Chapter 33. When Moses needed to know that God was with him, he asked God, “Show me your glory.” And God said, “If you saw me face to face you would die.”
But there is coming a day when we will live face-to-face with God in the fullness of his glory, not looking into a mirror dimly, but we will know as we are known. That is a big, big day.
The most vital, all-encompassing, indescribable truth of the New Jerusalem is we will be there in the permanent, tangible presence face-to-face with the full glory of God. We’ll be in relationship face-to-face with God and in perfect relationship with one another who have made the choice to go to Heaven through faith in Christ. We know this because that’s how God created the world, that’s how he created us, and that’s what he’s restoring as sin is finally and completely dealt with.
Then John continues to try to describe more of the indescribable facts of Heaven.
Revelation 21:12–13 (NLT)
12 The city wall was broad and high, with twelve gates guarded by twelve angels. And the names of the twelve tribes of Israel were written on the gates.
13 There were three gates on each side—east, north, south, and west.
Twelve gates with twelve angels at the gates. And notice verse 12 says And the names of the twelve tribes of Israel were written on the gates.
This is an eternal reminder of God’s covenant: you and I pass through the gates of Heaven because of God’s covenant to bring the Messiah through the Nation of Israel.
Never allow the anti-Jewish writings of the Fathers of the Reformation to convince you that God has replaced the Nation of Israel with the Church.
God’s covenants both with the Jewish Nation and the Church, are equally on display in the New Jerusalem (which we will clearly see as we continue).
And as we continue, notice the key role the number twelve plays. The number twelve symbolizes perfect order or perfect government.
And ultimately, we will see twelve gates, twelve pearls, twelve angels, Twelve Tribes of Israel, twelve foundations, twelve apostles, and twelve kinds of fruit. And the measurements of both the walls and the city are in multiples of twelve.
So, let’s not get wacky with the numbers, but let’s realize God is infinite in his communication. He can communicate in any way he wants, including when it comes to his miraculous communication through the use of complex messages in the numbers he’s used throughout the Bible.
The New Jerusalem definitely represents God’s perfect order and God’s perfect government.
Here comes some more “twelves.”
Revelation 21:14 (NLT)
14 The wall of the city had twelve foundation stones, and on them were written the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
Twelve foundation stones with the names of the twelve Apostles written on them. Ephesians 2:20 says that we are the Temple of the Lord on earth, and we have been built on the foundation of the Apostles and the Prophets, with Jesus, himself, being the Chief Cornerstone.
And so, God has built the New Jerusalem to forever remind us:
1). That our knowledge of God came through the gates of the Jewish People
2). Our faith in Christ has been built upon the foundation laid by the New Testament Apostles
That is incredible!
Now, the angel measures the city for us.
Revelation 21:15–17 (NLT)
15 The angel who talked to me held in his hand a gold measuring stick to measure the city, its gates, and its wall.
16 When he measured it, he found it was a square, as wide as it was long. In fact, its length and width and height were each 1,400 miles.
17 Then he measured the walls and found them to be 216 feet thick (according to the human standard used by the angel).
The New Jerusalem is a perfect cube 1,400 miles in length, width, and height. And so, the base (the first floor) of the New Jerusalem is 1,960,000 square miles – that is over half the size of the United States.
But it is not a two-dimensional city – it’s a three-dimensional city.
It is also 1,400 miles high, so covering half of the US and 1,400 miles high. And if the city is three-dimensional, it must have “vertical layers.” And let’s just say the layers are each one mile high – that’s 1,400 layers. So now, it’s 1,960,000 square miles times 1,400 layers, which is 2.7 billion square miles of area, which is fifteen times more than the current surface area of the earth, and that is just in the city of the New Jerusalem. And since the glory of God is the light of the city, the layers in the three-dimensional New Jerusalem must be transparent – which is exactly how John describes the eternal City of God.
John says this in Revelation 21.
Revelation 21:18 (NLT)
18 The wall was made of jasper, and the city was pure gold, as clear as glass.
Again (from verse 11), the clear jasper is like a perfect diamond, which is what the two-hundred-foot-thick wall is made of. Then John says the city was pure gold, as clear as glass. And then, glance down at the end of verse 21, and the main street was pure gold, as clear as glass. The city is “clear as glass” with transparent streets of gold with the glory of God shining through them.
So now, John returns to the twelve foundations with the names of the twelve Apostles inscribed on them.
Revelation 21:19–20 (NLT)
19 The wall of the city was built on foundation stones inlaid with twelve precious stones: the first was jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald,
20 the fifth onyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, the twelfth amethyst.
Each of these jewels is a different incredible color, all layered together by the Master Artist himself, and keeping with the image of transparent precious stones with all these incredibly colorful jewels – all with the full glory of God shining through them. That has got to blow your mind.
Then, in verse 21, we have two facts we’ve already mentioned.
Revelation 21:21 (NLT)
21 The twelve gates were made of pearls—each gate from a single pearl! And the main street was pure gold, as clear as glass.
So, yes, there are pearly gates (each gate made from a single pearl), but Peter is not waiting there to tell you a joke about a Rabbi, a Priest, and a Horse walking into Heaven.
Revelation 21:22 (NLT)
22 I saw no temple in the city, for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.
When John says he saw no Temple, he means no physical Temple. The Temple was the place where God would meet with the people, and now, the entire New Jerusalem is all the place for God to meet with the people.
And so, verse 22 says, the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. ALL of the New Jerusalem will be the place where we meet with God face-to-face in all of his glory.
And then the second thing that will not be in the New Jerusalem is in the next verse.
Revelation 21:23 (NLT)
23 And the city has no need of sun or moon, for the glory of God illuminates the city, and the Lamb is its light.
It doesn’t mean there is no sun or moon. It means the city doesn’t need the sun or moon.
How do we grasp something
so indescribable in its glory and
so indescribable in its magnificence?
We really can’t!
Henry Morris, that great Creation Scientist, said, “The New Jerusalem is composed of such beautiful materials, such unique construction, and such amazing dimensions as to be almost beyond human comprehension.”
And remember, this is just the capital city of the New Earth and New Heavens. The Bible makes it clear the Eternal Heave is not just the New Jerusalem. The New Jerusalem is the capital of the New Heavens and New Earth.
And we will be coming and going not only from a new glorified earth to the New Jerusalem but also to and from a New Glorified Universe.
Look at how verses 24-26 describe travel to the New Jerusalem.
Revelation 21:24–26 (NLT)
24 The nations (that means the people) will walk in its light, and the kings of the world will enter the city in all their glory.
25 Its gates will never be closed at the end of day because there is no night there.
26 And all the nations will bring their glory and honor into the city.
This is real
Real people will walk in its light
Real Kings of the world will enter the city
All the Nations will bring their glory and honor into the city.
The New Jerusalem is almost beyond human comprehension. Its glory is indescribable.
Here’s something to try to imagine because of the sheer size of the New Jerusalem and because God says the New Jerusalem comes down out of Heaven, but it never says it reaches earth. Some believe or speculate the New Jerusalem may be suspended over the earth with us traveling back and forth from the New Earth to the New Jerusalem and into the New Universe God has created.
If there is one thing the Eternal Heaven is not going to be – it’s boring – not even a chance.
All I can say is two things:
1) Heaven is going to be more and bigger and better than you can ever possibly imagine
2). Don’t miss it
Because . . .
Revelation 21:27 (NLT)
27 Nothing evil will be allowed to enter, nor anyone who practices shameful idolatry and dishonesty—but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.
That can be you today.
Turn from your sin and turn to Jesus Christ.
Ask him to forgive you and to come into your life
And he will write your name in the Lamb’s Book of Life
And you will enter Heaven, not based on your good works but based on the righteousness you receive from Jesus Christ by you putting your full faith in him.
I believe the enemy, using the influence of the world, has clouded our minds about Heaven, and he has deflated our excitement and stolen our passion for Heaven.
