Devo - What's in a Name?

What's in a Name?
Matthew 1:21

What’s in a name? When that name is Jesus – everything is in that name! There’s only one gift that is eternally important – the gift of Jesus. “God is Salvation.” What does that name mean to you personally? This devotion comes from the full message What’s in a Name?

Jesus Christ is King of kings and Lord of lords. But when he comes as such, you want to be with him. You don’t want to be on the wrong side of that. That’s why Luke 2, verse 11(ESV) says For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. What’s in a name? When the name is Savior, it’s everything. Everything is in that name. Jesus Christ came to the manger in order to be your Savior on the Cross. And everything he’s done for you, he’s done for you as Savior, and he IS Savior. But it’s not until you put your full faith and trust in him that he becomes your personal Savior.

There’s a moment when who he is becomes put to your account, reckoned to you. So, he’s not just Savior and King of kings; he’s your Savior and your King of kings. For unto you personally is born this day in the City of David, a personal Savior who is Christ the Lord. He came to save you from your sin. He came to redeem you, to buy you back, to ransom you back to God. He came to transfer you out of the kingdom of darkness into his own eternal Kingdom.

What’s in a name? When that name is Jesus – everything is in that name. That is the name above every other name, the name at which one day every knee will bow, and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of the Father. When that name is Jesus, everything is in that name.

But listen, we haven’t talked about what the name “Jesus” means. Jesus. Sometimes you just say the name Jesus. Jesus. The name Jesus – it means “God is Salvation.” And that name means everything. It means everything. Jesus. It’s the most wonderful name.

The only question is: what does that name mean to you, personally? What’s it mean to you, personally? Jesus. God is Salvation. And there’s a moment coming when your eternity is either opened or closed to you based on what that name means to you.

Jesus. As we read in the beginning, John 1, verse 12 (ESV), But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become the children of God. Jesus came as the gift of eternal life. But we must receive him. We receive him by believing that all that his name means, all that we can grasp, we put our faith in. We trust him. We call him our own. We cling to him. We surrender to him. And when we do that, we receive the greatest gift of all, eternity. We become children of God.

What’s in a name? The angel said to Joseph, “You are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” There’s only one gift that’s eternally important; it’s the gift of Jesus. God is Salvation.
