Journal Guide - The Appetizer For Jesus - Mark 1:7

The Appetizer For Jesus
Mark 1:7

Week 2/Day 4

Hi all. My name is Daisy, and today I’m inviting you to join me as we open our Bibles and spend some quality alone time with God together in this devotional. To follow along, you just need your Bible, and a pen, and a designated journal. If you have our Alone With God journal, please follow along with us in your journal notes. If you don’t have the Alone With God journal, you can use a different journal instead or download a journal page here. Please reach out to us at wordbymail.com and order one because the Alone With God journal is perfectly crafted, and it goes along with these devotionals that we’re doing. It’s the perfect way to practice spending alone time with God and really getting into the scripture and transforming your life through the Living Word of God.

So, today we are going to be meditating on Mark1:7. I’ll read through this verse a couple of times, and then I would just like for you to meditate on that verse on your own so that the scripture really sinks in.

Mark 1:7 (NET)
7 He proclaimed, “One more powerful than I am is coming after me; I am not worthy to bend down and untie the strap of his sandals.

Go ahead and, in the Meditate section of your journal, write down what God is saying here. Just meditate on that verse for a little bit. What are the spiritual principles in this verse?

One time at Vacation Bible School when I was little, someone compared John the Baptist to the appetizer of Jesus, and I just thought that was so funny. So, whenever I read about John the Baptist, I always think of that comparison. And then I think about how the entire Bible before the coming of Christ is the appetizer to his arrival. It is the great preparation for something even greater.

And even now, it’s our job as Christians to serve as the appetizer for the return of Christ. To love others the way God has asked us to love them, to preach the Good News, and to walk humbly with God as we navigate this world. Our job, like the job of John the Baptist back then, is to tell people about what is coming and how good it’s going to be and to point everyone to the Source of new life.

Now, let’s pause for a moment. In the Apply section of your journal, write down your thoughts about it. What stands out to you about this verse? And maybe you notice that there are some things in your life that are greater than God that are serving as the main course instead of just being the appetizer. So, take some time and write down how this verse applies to your life today, personally and specifically.

So, now we are going to take a moment and respond to God with action. What action can you take this week to bring this verse to life? Evaluate your lifestyle. What things in your world are taking precedence over Jesus? What can you work on adjusting this week to give God a bigger place in your life? Like today, we read about how John the Baptist declares Jesus as more powerful than he is, but he’s not even worthy to bend down and untie the straps of his sandals. He had such a good perspective on who Jesus was. How can you have a greater perspective of who Jesus is? Take a moment, and in the Respond section, write down the actions you will take this week in response to the truth in this verse.

Finally, we’re going to close in prayer. I will pray, and then under the Pray section, write down your prayer to align your heart with the will of God in this area. Take a few minutes and write a prayer of your own.

Let’s pray.

Jesus, help me to keep my eyes and my heart set on you. Thank you for dying for my sins and for leading me into everlasting life where I can be reunited with my Creator. Free me from a life of distractions and help me make you the center of my story rather than me being the center of my story or the things I possess being the center of my story. Remove it all and make you my main focus. In Jesus’ name, amen.
