Journal Guide - Free From The Old You - Romans 8:1-2

Free From The Old You
Romans 8:1-2

Week 5/Day 4

Hello everybody. I hope you are having a wonderful day so far, wherever this devotional finds you. My name is Daisy, and I am going to be leading you through our devotional today. So, to follow along, all you will need is a Bible, a pen, a designated journal, and a quiet space. If you have our Alone With God journal, please use that. If you do not have our Alone With God journal, you can order one at wordbymail.com. We would love for you to have one, and they make following these devotionals so much easier, and it’s just a really great tool for strengthening or building your relationship with God.

Today, we are going to be meditating on Romans 8:1-2. I will read the verses a couple of times, and then you read them on your own, spending some time reading them slowly and carefully and asking God to speak to you through his Word.

Romans 8:1-2 (NIV)
1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,
2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.

Now, go ahead and, in the Meditate section of your journal, write out the scripture in your own words without changing what the scripture says. Let the words sink in while you’re writing. What is God’s Word saying? What are the spiritual principles here?

When my little brother was growing up, I think he had a really hard time being in my shadow. I think that being Daisy’s little brother made him feel invisible and overlooked sometimes. And it can be really hard on us when we feel like we’ve taken on this identity that doesn’t really reflect who we are or who we want to be.

And our sin can make us feel enslaved and overshadowed by this dark identity. But when Jesus saves us, he calls us to a new life and a new purpose, and he gives us a new identity. And in that new identity, we are free from the past and any condemnation from the old identity.

So, how can you apply this scripture to your life? In the Apply section of your journal, write down your thoughts or what stands out to you about the passage, and think about what areas of your life God has transformed. How do these verses apply to your life today, personally and specifically?

Now, we are going to take a moment and respond to God with action. In the Respond section of your journal page, write down your thoughts. So, think about if there’s anything that you’re having trouble accepting forgiveness for in any areas of your life that are crowded with shame or are reminding you of your old identity. What’s one step you can take today to put action behind the belief that God is not condemning you, that God loves you, that you are forgiven, and that you are a new creation in Christ? Respond to God by writing down what action you can take today in response to this truth.

Finally, we are going to close in prayer. I will pray first. Then, in the Pray section of your journal page, write out a prayer to God in response to this time with him. What can you pray to align your heart with the will of God on this truth? Make your commitment to God and thank him for speaking to you through his Word.

Let’s pray.

God, thank you that you do not condemn us. Thank you that you give us a new life through a fresh identity in Christ. Thank you that your love never fails and that you are merciful in every situation that we face. Draw near to us and keep us on the path of righteousness. In Jesus’ name, amen.
