Journal Guide - Treasure - Matthew 6:21

Hi everyone. Thank you for joining me today. My name is Daisy, and today we are going to be looking at Matthew 6, verse 21. So, to follow along, you will just need your Bible, and a journal, or a piece of paper. If you do have our Alone With God journal, please use that. It is what this is made for.

It is a journal that can be intentionally used when you are spending alone time with God. That is what it is for, and that is how we styled these recordings so that we could walk you through them and teach you how to spend time with God. Please let us know if you need one.

Today’s message is short and sweet. It is one verse.

Matthew 6:21 (NIV)
21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Let’s just let that verse sink in. In the Meditate section of your journal page, write down what this verse is saying. What is the spiritual principle here?

When I read this verse, the first thought that comes to my mind is my bank account, my earthly treasures, my money. If someone looked through my spending patterns, what would they find? What would they see that’s valuable to me? What do I spend my money on the most? And outside of spending it on food and shelter, and clothing, am I using my money to enrich the lives of others? Am I hoarding it out of fear? Am I being a good steward of it? Am I spending it on things that glorify God?

What are the things in our lives that represent the quality and the contents of our hearts? What are we valuing? And does it align with our obedience to God? Where are our hearts?

I would like you to take out your pen, your journal, or your piece of paper and apply this passage to your life. What is God trying to teach you? What is God trying to show you about your own heart? In the Apply section of your journal page, take a moment, pause, reflect, and write down what the Holy Spirit is addressing in your life through this scripture. How does it specifically apply to your life today?

Alright. Now, I’d like you to respond to God. What intentional action can you take to apply this truth to your life? How can you reevaluate the things that matter to you? What are your treasures, and how can you align them with the will of God? In the Respond section of your journal, write down what you are going to do today in response to this scripture.

Now, finally, in the Pray section of your journal, write down your prayer about what God has put on your heart today. Pray to align your heart with the will of God on this truth.

Let’s pray together.

God, help us to identify the things that we are holding onto in this life. Is it you, or is it our material goods? Are we investing in the treasures that you have poured out abundantly for us, or are we clutching onto the very temporary pleasures of this world for our fulfillment? Please help us to remember to put our earthly resources to good use and to honor you with our hearts in the process. In Jesus’ name, amen.
