Get Alone With God

Meditate

There is one place where real spiritual transformation begins. It is not in a religious performance. It is not in a hurried reading of a few words before the day takes over. It is not in simply knowing more information about God. Real transformation begins in a real relationship with the living God.

That relationship begins the moment we are saved by faith in Jesus Christ. But salvation is not the end of our interaction with God. It is the beginning of a growing, living, eternal relationship with Him. And it is within that ongoing relationship that God gets hold of us, molds us, shapes us, refines us, and transforms our lives.

M.I.P.
Getting alone with God creates the environment where His Word and His Spirit can noticeably transform our lives.

This is the heart of Psalm 62. David is not simply thinking about God. He is turning his soul toward God. He is quieting his heart before God. He is learning to wait for God alone.

Psalm 62:1-2; Psalm 62:5-8
David teaches his own soul to wait quietly before God alone, because God alone is his salvation, his rock, his fortress, his hope, his refuge, and the One before whom he can pour out his heart.

That is what it means to get alone with God. We are not trying to complete a spiritual checklist. We are setting aside time to purposefully meet with the Lord in such a way that His Word and His Spirit begin to reshape the way we think, the way we desire, the way we respond, and the way we live.

But this is not easy. We live in a world of screens. If it is not the television screen, it is the computer screen. And if it is not the computer screen, it is the phone screen. We are constantly being pulled, prompted, interrupted, entertained, and distracted. The world is always trying to tell us what to think about, what to desire, what to fear, and what to chase.

That is why we have to choose to stop. We have to choose to turn away from the constant noise long enough to say, "Right now, I am not going to be led by the screens of this world. Right now, I am going to get alone with God."

Psalm 46:10
God calls His people to be still and know that He is God. Stillness before Him is not emptiness; it is the quieting of our hearts so we can recognize His presence, His rule, His voice, and His sufficiency.

And when we look at Jesus, we see this pattern perfectly. Jesus was surrounded by real needs, real people, real pain, and real ministry pressure. Crowds gathered to hear Him. People came to be healed. Everyone was looking for Him. Yet Jesus repeatedly withdrew to lonely places to pray.

Luke 5:15-16; Mark 1:35-37; Mark 6:45-46
Jesus withdrew from the crowds, rose early while it was still dark, went to desolate places, dismissed the people, sent the disciples ahead, and spent time alone with the Father in prayer.

Jesus did not allow the burden of ministry to keep Him from time alone with the Father. In fact, Jesus knew He could not carry out His mission without that time. If time alone with the Father was crucial for Jesus while He was on earth, how much more crucial is it for us?

Apply

Getting alone with God is about setting aside a regular time and place where we go one-on-one with God in His Word and in prayer, led by the Holy Spirit. It is a place where we feed the spirit instead of feeding the flesh. It is a time where we experience a real relationship with God.

And in that time, we come with a simple but life-changing desire:

  • Knowing that He is with us.
  • Interacting with Him in His Word.
  • Responding to Him according to what He shows us.

This is not a secret formula. It is not a way to earn God's love. It is not a religious system that makes us more acceptable to Him. We are accepted by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. But because we belong to Him, we need to meet with Him. We need to hear from Him. We need to open our hearts honestly before Him and let His Word speak directly into our lives.

Matthew 6:6
Jesus calls His disciples to go away by themselves, shut the door, and pray to the Father in private, trusting that the Father sees what happens in that hidden place.

The hidden place matters. The quiet place matters. The regular place matters. God calls us away from the noise so He can meet with us in a way that begins to change us from the inside out.

So how do we begin?

  1. Choose a real time.
Do not wait for a perfect moment to appear on its own. It probably will not. You may need to rise early. You may need to stay up a little later. You may need to guard a small window in your day. But choose a time when you can be present with the Lord.
  2. Choose a quiet place.
Find a place where you can shut the door on distractions. That may be a room, a chair, a desk, a patio, a parked car, or a quiet corner. The point is not the location itself. The point is creating space to meet with God.
  3. Put away the screens.
The world will not stop interrupting you on its own. You will have to decide to silence the phone, close the laptop, turn off the noise, and give God your attention.
  4. Come to God in His Word and prayer.
Open the Bible with a surrendered heart. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you. Read slowly. Listen honestly. Let God's Word search you, encourage you, correct you, strengthen you, and lead you.
  5. Respond to what God shows you.
Do not stop at reading. Ask, "Lord, what are You showing me? What are You asking me to trust, confess, surrender, believe, or obey?" Then respond by faith, depending on the power of the Holy Spirit.
2 Corinthians 3:18
As believers behold the glory of the Lord, the Spirit transforms them more and more into the image of Christ.

This is what God wants for us. He does not merely want us to be informed. He wants us to be transformed. He wants to move us from a life controlled by the flesh to a life led by the Spirit. He wants to draw us into a real, genuine, life-changing relationship with Himself.

And that transformation does not usually happen in a rush. It happens as we repeatedly come before Him, open His Word, pour out our hearts, listen to His voice, and respond to Him in faith.

Respond

Maybe the Lord is calling you to create that place again. Maybe your life has been full of noise, hurry, screens, pressure, and distraction. Maybe you have been trying to follow Jesus without consistently meeting with Jesus. Today, hear the invitation of the Lord: Get alone with God.

Not because He is far away. Because He is near. Not because you have to earn His love. Because you already belong to Him. Not because transformation depends on your strength. Because His Word and His Spirit are powerful enough to change your life.

  • Set apart a regular time to meet with God.
  • Choose a quiet place where you can focus on Him.
  • Turn away from the screens and distractions that are shaping your mind.
  • Open God's Word with a humble and surrendered heart.
  • Ask the Holy Spirit to help you hear, apply, and respond.
  • Keep showing up, trusting God to transform you over time.
Prayer:
Father, I want to meet with You in a real and life-changing way. Forgive me for the times I have let the noise of the world crowd out my time with You. Teach me to be still before You. Help me set apart time to open Your Word, pour out my heart, listen to Your Spirit, and respond in obedience. Transform me more and more into the image of Jesus. Amen.
